Welder (CWB Ticket)

Job Description: Operate welding equipment to weld structural metal components/members.
Duties: Performs some or all of the following:
1. Read and interpret blueprints and welding process specification.
2. Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments using processes such as gas metal arc (GMAW), flux-cored arc (FCAW), shielded metal arc (SMAW).
3. Operate manual or semi-automatic flame cutting equipment.
Education: Some college/vocational or technical training.
Credentials: Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) Certificate or equivalent. Type of Equipment: Cutting torches, Grinders, Drills
Area of Specialization: Structural metal or steel
Major Work Area: Fabrication, Assembly
Fitting Welding Techniques: Tack, MIG, TIG
Specific Skills: Interpret welding process specifications jigs or set-ups for welding.
Essential Skills: Must be able to examine welds and ensure that they meet standards and/or specification. Reading text, Document use, Numeracy, Writing and Oral Communication, Working with others, Problem Solving, Critical Thinking, Job task planning and organizing, Significant use of memory, Finding information and continuous learning.

Fabricator/Fitter

Job Description: Lays out, prepares and assembles structural steel according to structural steel plans and drawings.
Duties: Performs some or all of the following:
1. Study engineering drawings and blueprints, determines the materials required, plan the sequence of tasks to cut metal most efficiently.
2. Constructs patterns and templates as guides for layouts.
3. Layout reference points and patterns on heavy metal according to component specifications.
4. Rig, hoist and move materials within the worksite.
5. Assemble and fit metal sections and plates to form complete units of subunits using tack welding, bolting, riveting or other methods.
6. Set up and operate heavy duty metal-working machines such as break presses, shears, cutting torches, grinders and drills equipment to cut, bend, form, punch, drill or otherwise form heavy metal components. Future requirement: Computer Numerical Control (CNC) knowledge.
7. Install fabricated components in final products.
Education: Some college/vocational or technical training.
Credentials: Steel Fabrication (Fitter) Red Seal Certificate or equivalent
Type of Equipment: Brakes and presses, Cutting torches, Grinders, Drills
Area of Specialization: Structural metal or steel
Major Work Area: Fabrication, Assembly, Fitting
Welding Techniques: Tack, MIG, TIG
Specific Skills: Lay out reference points and patterns, Assemble and fit plates and section to form structure, Weld or bolt section together, Set up and operate heavy duty metal-working machines, construct pattern and templates.

Kelly O'Sullivan
Kelly O'Sullivan founded The Steel Guys in 2001. Prior to this, the O'Sullivan family has been in the steel business for three generations, starting in the early 1900's. Kelly started on the shop floor in the late 60's, learning the fabrication business, before moving into management, During this time, he held positions from estimating, sales, and production control to senior management.
Brian Kennedy
Brian Kennedy started in the steel business in the early 80's, apprenticing in steel fabrication and welding, with West Coast Steel Fabricators. In his career, Brian was worked his way from helper to plant foreman and has ample experience in all plant and field installation functions. Brian has over 35 years of experience in manufacturing, welding and installation of structural and miscellaneous steel. He is currently in charge of all fabrication, welding and installation for The Steel Guys.

Our fully equipped shop is a modern facility complete with overhead cranes. We have an experienced staff of fitters and welders. Our welders are certified in mild, stainless and aluminum. Over the years we have fabricated a wide variety of products and are capable of doing "one off" prototypes or production runs.
